10 Easy-to-Do Tips to Reduce Your Plastic Use ā™»ļø

Breaking news, the coastline of Guatemala has become a plastic wasteland. All because we use an astonishing amount of single use plastic (139 million tons, in 2021, of which only 10% of that was recycled). So it shouldn’t be a surprise that by 2050 our oceans will host more plastic than fish. The good news? We’ve compiled 10 tips & swaps for using less plastic in your day-to-day life that’ll add up in the long run.

  1. Get rid of your shampoo bottles and try these 100% plastic-free shampoo bars.

  2. Avoid the produce aisle’s plastic-packaged veggies and grow your own veggies with this easy countertop garden

  3. Cook at home more; the average delivered meal will use around 2.8 single-use plastic items.

  4. Switch from plastic toothpaste tubes to plastic-free bits

  5. You’re probably already doing this but, avoid plastic shopping bags, try these colorful reusable alternatives instead.

  6. Bring your own cup to Starbucks. Why? In 2019, 4.2 billion disposable coffee cups were sold in the UK alone.

  7. Switch to online banking; paper accounts for ~26% of landfill waste and each sheet of paper requires 2-13 liters of water to make

  8. Ditch the cling wrap (which can’t be recycled) and use aluminum foil instead, or even better, beeswax wrap.

  9. Use plastic longer. If you can’t avoid plastic, make more use of it, wash it, and reuse it for something else.

  10. Buy boxes instead of bottles. Laundry or dishwasher detergent often comes in cardboard boxes which are easier to recycle than the plastic bottle alternative.
